IFH initiates Tobacco Control Project in Tyumen Oblast
The Institute for Family Health will implement the Tobacco Control Project funded by the Tyumen Oblast Government. The importance of struggling against tobacco using is now recognized all over the world. In Russia, the problem of smoking today is more urgent and challenging than ever before
This fact is confirmed by the evidences [i]:
- It is estimated, that more than 40 million people in Russia are current smokers: 63% of men and 30% of women.
- The male-smoking rates in Russia are nearly the highest in the world. The smoking population growth rates also remain very high.
- Tobacco-attributed illnesses kill 220 thousand people in Russia every year, with more than 40% of male deaths from smoking-related cardiovascular diseases.
The goals of the Tobacco Control Project:
- To protect the non-smoking population from secondhand smoking;
- To inform the community of negative impact caused by smoking;
- To establish medical service for smoking cessation.
In the framework of the State Contract fulfillment, the Institute for Family Health, jointly with the Tyumen Oblast Health Department, will implement a series of activities: development of Tyumen Oblast Smoking Free Policy including Tobacco Control Enforcement System, building up a coalition against tobacco among stakeholders and training health care providers in counseling patients in smoking cessation. The Policy will be based in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and successful international experience. The IFH specialists and experts will develop and conduct a seminar for various groups of health care providers. A long-term Anti-smoking Campaign in Tyumen Oblast will also be developed within the State Contract.
It is a new step in healthy lifestyle promotion, institutionalized by IFH (see reference).
